Reading texture

Monaspace’s texture healing lets wider letters borrow unused space from neighboring narrow letters. It substitutes letter shapes to make the spacing more even while preserving the monospace grid. For example, an m next to an l can extend into some of the space the l leaves unused.

Coding features

Monaspace includes five coordinated coding families: Neon, Argon, Xenon, Radon, and Krypton. Their shared metrics let you mix different letter styles within code, for example to distinguish comments from other syntax. MonoLisa pairs its coding family with MonoLisa Text, a proportional companion for prose and interfaces.

Measured feature summary: MonoLisa exposes liga, dlig, calt, zero, ss01-ss15, and cv01-cv12. Monaspace exposes calt, liga, ss01-ss10, and selected cvXX features.

Italics and style range

MonoLisa Code’s italics redraw letterforms to create a clear contrast with upright text. Monaspace Neon v1.400 uses designed obliques: the letters are slanted and their contours adjusted, while their basic Latin construction stays close to the upright. Monaspace provides named Italic styles in all five families, with additional italic alternates that vary by family.

The specimen below pairs upright and italic text in MonoLisa Code and Monaspace Neon. MonoLisa’s stronger change in letterforms can help distinguish comments or other syntax roles that your editor displays in italics.

MonoLisa Code offers 10 named weights from Hairline to Black, with separate upright and italic variable files and weight (wght) and grade (GRAD) axes. The measured Monaspace Neon family offers 7 weights from ExtraLight to ExtraBold, with variable controls for weight (wght), width (wdth), and slant (slnt).

Choose MonoLisa Code when broader measured language coverage and strong upright-to-italic differentiation matter most. Choose Monaspace when free, open-source licensing or variable width and slant controls matter more. All five Monaspace families supply named Italic instances, but their basic-Latin construction is predominantly oblique and their form substitutions vary by family; this comparison does not characterize them as fully redrawn italics across the superfamily.

  • Languages were measured locally with Hyperglot 0.8.1 by running .venv-hyperglot/bin/hyperglot --no-shaping --orthography primary --status living --check base <font-file>: primary orthographies, living languages, base-character support, with shaping disabled.
  • Italic construction was inspected in all five Monaspace v1.400 variable fonts. HarfBuzz shaping at slnt=0 and slnt=-11 was used to check automatic slant-triggered substitutions. For basic Latin, Argon substitutes only f; Xenon substitutes f, h, i, k, l, m, n, r, and u; Neon, Radon, and Krypton make no automatic substitutions. Neither a nor g switches in any family. Neon, Argon, and Krypton also switch several localized Serbian Cyrillic forms, while Xenon has broader Cyrillic substitutions; Radon has none triggered by slant.
  • The separate OpenType ital substitution feature was checked explicitly. It provides additional family-specific alternates that moving the slnt axis alone does not necessarily activate. Some alternates remain geometric slants. The description of these designs as predominantly oblique reflects their retained upright construction as well as the substitution results.
